MY STORy

Hi, my name is Katherine Staples and my work is created in my studio at Rutland Garden Centre close to Oakham.

My work explores the fluid energy of the ocean and the traces that it leaves behind in the sand. Guided by the shifting rhythms of the tide, I create abstract ceramic sculptures and wall pieces that capture the dialogue between water and earth. I am deeply fascinated by the movement of the water and the waves, the marks left in the sand, the ribbed patterns, the gentle furrows and the quiet textures carved by the receding water. These fleeting moments are translated into permanent clay forms.

My journey with clay began during my BA Design Crafts at De Montfort University where I discovered the incredible tactile nature of this medium and I went on to further specialise my skills at Loughborough University where I completed my Masters in Ceramics.

Through the process of intuitive hand building, I am able to create bespoke sculptures and wall pieces that mimic the physical forces of the coast and the constant motion of the sea. My pieces are designed to transform internal and external spaces and walls.

Every piece that I make is a entirely unique and available to purchase. Whether you are looking to buy an existing sculpture or commission a bespoke piece, every creation is tailored to your space and budget. Please contact me directly to discuss current availability and future projects.
